Workplace health and safety is, or should be, a top priority for every New Zealand company, so it is imperative that professionals in the field are qualified to meet the demands of the job. Formal qualifications equip people with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and mitigate potential hazards. Recognising potential safety risks and taking the necessary steps to prevent accidents and injuries before they occur, involves everything from developing safety protocols and procedures to conducting training sessions for employees. These are not easy skills to just ‘pick up on the job.’ Qualifications also provide methodologies to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and accompanying regulations. This is essential for companies who want to avoid legal liability, and operate responsibly to keep staff safe. Qualified health and safety professionals also contri bute to overall workplace culture and productivity. When employees feel safe and supported, they are more likely to feel engaged in their work. By fostering a culture of safety, health and safety create a more positive workplace environment. It should provide some comfort to know that a recent HASANZ (Health and Safety Association of NZ) survey found 16 per cent of people working in health and safety had a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate in OHS. Forty-four per cent had a Diploma or Certificate in another field and 22 per cent had no qualifications beyond various day courses or modules. Formal qualifications are essential for Health and Safety
Digital Construction in Aotearoa Getting on the Same Page
The use of digital tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Digital Twins, and Digital Engineering are becoming common place internationally. Right now, in countries such as Norway, complete design-consent-build processes are happening without any paper being printed. Closer to home in Aotearoa, the use of digital tools is starting to gather momentum, but more needs to be done to make their use as consistent and as simple as possible. The New Zealand Institute of Building and the BIMinNZ Steering Group have launched a Digital BIM Guidance Project. Through this project they will update the current guidelines and create new resources to make sure we are all on the same page when it comes to digital construction. Together, they will connect key stakeholders to form an inclusive network of experts. The Construction Sector Accord is funding this project through its Innovation workstream. Earlier this year, the Institute of Building and the BIMinNZ Steering Group ran the ‘Building our Digital Community’ or #DigiComNZ2023 conference in Wellington. More than 250 people across design, digital and construction roles attended and showed there is a growing interest in the future of digital construction in New Zealand. Presenters showed that using digital construction tools is not just something for the future, it is happening right now. The use of digital tools and techniques in the construction process drives productivity, improves accuracy, increases collaboration, and clarifies communication. International Keynote speaker - “Queen of Prefab”, Amy Marks (pictured above speaking at DigicomNZ2023) challenged everyone at the conference to get on board and be part of the digital revolution. She pointed out that physical construction waste is a direct result of digital waste, so we must be more efficient and aligned on how we all operate digitally, together. The Digital BIM Guidance Project aims to make sure when we do all get on board, we’ll all be heading together in the same direction.
THE DIGITAL BIM GUIDANCE (DIGIGUIDE) PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON THREE STREAMS OF WORK. 1. Research the BIM Value Case to understand why it is important to update the existing guidance now, what is holding back the BIM/digital uptake in Aotearoa, and what are the potential benefits of greater uptake. 2. Review and update the current BIM handbook to ensure it is aligned with the relevant international standards, considers any industry led process changes and includes new terminology such as digital engineering. 3. Develop a suite of procurement related guidance which will support alignment with relevant international standards and imminent updates to New Zealand industry standards and guidelines. If you would like to get involved or find out more, please contact the Digital BIM Guidance Project Manager Hannah Keir-Smith at Hannah@nziob.org.nz The NZ Institute of Building is a pan-industry membership organisation for individuals in Aotearoa’s building industry to connect, belong and give back. Our members deliver complex commercial projects with management roles across Site, Construction, Project, Cost, Digital and Design functions. Together, we are focused on innovation in the industry, inclusion of a range of roles and people, and encouraging the next generation. Check out our member benefits today. We celebrate exemplary behaviour and performance at our annual NZ Building People Awards. This year it will be at Te Pae in Otautahi Christchurch on Friday 18 August. Come along - nzbuildingpeopleawards.org.nz.
Alarmingly, the survey also found 42 per cent did not belong to a professional association. If New Zealand is striving for a true Health and Safety Culture, we need to increase the level of training and support for those in the industry. The Employers and Manufacturers Association Northern has been providing continuing education and peer networking for health and safety professionals since 1992. They offer a full suite of health and safety courses to provide a pathway from a Health and Safety Representative all the way to an NZQA Level 6 Diploma, one of the few Training Providers in the country that do. If you are interested in formal qualifications in Health and Safety, or looking to improve health and safety in your organisation, contact Joe Boyle at the EMA at joe.boyle@ema.co.nz

Editorial Resene
Beloved blues are having a heyday Blue paint colours like Resene Duck Egg Blue and grey-edged favourites like Resene Timeless remain popular. Today’s top blues are taking on yellow and green undertones, with shades like Resene Epic, Resene Island Time, and Resene Lakeside coming to the forefront. Purples progress Lavender and periwinkle tones like Resene Heliotrope, Resene Perano, and Resene Portage are gaining popularity as futuristic and optimistic symbols. Deep plum and aubergine tones like Resene Black Doris, Resene Staccato, and Resene Blackberry serve as interesting alternatives to dark blues. The green machine loses momentum Greens have warmed considerably, evolving from sage and olive to more verdant, grassy shades like Resene Japanese Laurel, Resene Boundless, and Resene Funk. Subtly warm greens like Resene Transcend, Resene White Noise, and Resene Infused remain popular. Grey has (mostly) had its day Warm neutrals are now in vogue, and designers are using multiple neutrals from different colour cards for a richer, more complex look. Warm greys like Resene Hindsight, Resene Stepping Stone, and Resene Credence blend well with toasty neutrals like beiges, browns, and taupe. Stay updated on evolving colour trends with monthly BlackWhite e-newsletters and visit www. blackwhitemag.com for updates. Sign up for free at www.resene.com/enews.
Colour Trends for the ‘new’ Normal Since the return to ‘the new normal’, time feels like it’s passing at breakneck speed. After a couple of relatively stagnant years where most of us were stuck at home more than we might have liked, popular culture seems to have also put its foot on the gas to make up for lost time.
As we return to normalcy after the pandemic, colour trends are evolving rapidly. These trends are influenced by our surroundings and the cultural zeitgeist. Here are some of the most relevant colour trends for the next 18 months: Red heats up Red is primed for a major takeover in interior decorating and architectural design. Brick reds like Resene Pioneer Red, Resene Thunderbird, and Resene Arriba have been popular, but will soon be joined by poppy reds like Resene Roadster and deeper wine-like tones such as Resene Incarnadine.
