ASBUILT IMMERSION LAB Immerse yourself in a digital world in the asBuilt Immersion Lab.

Hall 3

asBuilt’s Immersion Lab is a portable seven metre diameter, 360° circular studio theatre. It is the only one of it’s kind in New Zealand.

Immersion Lab projects a digital environment into the physical world to showcase assets virtually; allowing unique immersive group and stakeholder experiences. A picture speaks 1000 words. Technical complexity is best conveyed via 3D imagery and graphics. This is certainly the case when that imagery moves around you, with full surround-sound at three metres high. The viewer is immersed into the moving image itself and every sense in their body tells them they are ‘in’ that space. This is a great environment for stakeholder engagement, training and storytelling.

BACKUP OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY WITH UNITEC'S UPCYCLED MATERIALS WITHIN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN-BUILD PROJECTS A circular economy is a transformative economy that redefines production and consumption patterns to eliminate waste and add value to material circulation. Although scholars and practitioners have different interpretations of the circular economy concept, most agree that it is strongly linked to reducing, reusing, and recycling activities. Reusing timber offcuts, for items such as dining tables and desks for one or two people or even multi-person urban furniture, can help create useful products while decreasing construction waste. In New Zealand, many social entrepreneurs and startups are investigating how to upcycle everyday waste. The upstart Critical was established in 2013 by Rui Peng and Andy Crowe to achieve environmental sustainability by upcycling plastic waste to create aesthetically pleasing functional objects.

More recently, talented PhD Candidate, Ged Finch developed the XFrame building system that aims to transition to circularity in

were fashioned into a pop-up seating area and integrated bike parking for the 2021/22 summer. The new project will be installed at Auranga’s emerging suburban community later in the year. It will seek to push the design, scale and the number of stakeholders in its realisation to fabricate a more permanent pavilion structure. The project will use three times the amount of recycled ABODO product, turning it into laminated square profile lengths. SaveBoard, a sustainable building material created from packaging waste, will be used to brace the structure and provide some interesting aesthetic design opportunities. By involving the community we seek to further emphasise the benefits of reusing and repurposing waste products for new outcomes to a broad societal group, and in doing so, highlight ways to consider their own behaviour around consumption. construction by offering a construction system that recovers and reuses almost all the building layers. The product provides a modular framing and commercial fit-out system out of 13 standard CNC plywood parts that include structure and internal and external linings. The XFrame circular building system incorporated reversible fixing methods to ensure changes can be easily made while minimising the mess and waste. Within the Unitec Institute of Technologies' School of Architecture, we try to incorporate ideas of sustainable practices with our student- build projects. Over the last few years, many exhibition-based projects utilised circular economy practises as an effective educational tool for improving the built environment and assisting students in interacting with the community and applying theories to real-world projects.

Unitec has been working with XPO Exhibitions to produce student- led product displays for the past five years. In 2019, the Unitec Straw into Gold project sought to spotlight climate change and better building practices. The exhibit contained a one-third scale model of a small habitable structure that explored technologies around circular economies and community empowerment. At the heart of this project was the utilisation of bio-based building materials, specifically straw, a by-product of grain production and an abundant resource in Aotearoa, to develop an insulated, prefabricated timber-frame panel. The project planned for this year's BuildNZ Mega event intends to extend on previous work that resulted in the production of an upcycled 'BikePod' for 'Auranga's Village Square. In this project we produced laminated panels from recycled ABODO offcuts. These

TRENDS // RESENE

Inspired by trends

A renewed love of honesty in materials, which favours those that come from nature, have made linen, wood, cane, clay and stone incredibly desirable to decorate with for their longevity and inherent beauty – along with light, bright and breezy Resene paint, timber stain colour pairings and low sheen natural look clear finishes to suit. Simple, pared down silhouettes and Scandinavian influences like whitewashed timbers in Resene Colorwood Whitewash and minimalist furnishings that focus on quality and sustainability over quantity are hugely popular. A timber headboard finished in Resene Colorwood Whitewash adds another layer of visual texture and variety to this airy tonal space. Wall in Resene Triple Pearl Lusta, floor and pendant lamp in Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta, artwork in Resene Half Black White, vases in Resene Triple Bison Hide and Resene Half Bison Hide, bowl in Resene Grey Olive and chair in Resene Brown Bramble. Linen from Foxtrot Home, cushion and pink vase from Città, throw, candle holder and mug from Blackbird Goods. Greens reign supreme From fashion to interiors, there is no hotter hue right now than green. As recently as last year, it was lighter shades of sage that were the dominant variation, but there has been a sharp shift as greens have become less grey and instead have taken on far warmer and yellowed undertones. While paler celery greens, appetising avocadoes and lavish chartreuses are all relevant viridian varietals, it’s richly saturated and enticing olive greens that have come to the forefront of popularity. Distinctly comforting and cosy with strong roots in nature, it’s understandable why lush and leafy colours like Resene Olive Green, Resene Seaweed and Resene Woodland have become the most desirable for decorating as we try and seek solace in the midst of an increasingly complicated world. No colour is more popular in home decorating today than greens – especially olive tones. Upper wall in Resene Stone Age, lower wall and battens in Resene Wilderness, floor in Resene Green White, side tables in Resene Alabaster with ‘marble effect’ in Resene FX Paint Effects medium coloured with Resene Rolling Stone, cacti pot in Resene Celeste and vases/accessories in Resene Beethoven, Resene Papier Mache, Resene Hampton, Resene Toffee, Resene Teak and Resene Twine.

The ripple effect created by recent challenges has been hugely disruptive for decorating and design trends, given the massive interruption to global supply chains and the cancellation of significant fashion and design events. This has opened things up to more opportunities for creativity. Decorators are taking matters into their own hands and creating clever and colourful solutions that are unique to their personal wants and needs, as well of those of their family, rather than being dominated by fast fashion and quick trend turnover. Here’s some key trends that homeowners are focusing on. Walls, floors and ceilings are the backdrop to so many accessories and gift purchases. These are some of the colour themes your clients may be inspired by:

Lighter than air Recent events have reminded all of us of the need to take (or make) time to switch off and tune in to what’s really important: our own wellbeing and the health of those we care about. This turn towards self-care and wellness is materialising into a sweeping change of lifestyles and values, and a rethink of how we bring this into the design of our homes.

RESENE // TRENDS

Down to earth The decade long obsession with motifs, colours, materials and silhouettes popular in the 80s has waned and made way for 1970s influences. This is playing out through both colours but also with textures through earthy, handmade artisanal elements like pottery, macrame and dried floral arrangements. Given the natural beauty inherent to wood grain, it’s no wonder that timber walls, ceilings, flooring and joinery are all trending. When it comes to colours, look to browns from suede to espresso like Resene Dusty Road and Resene Felix, rich adobe terracotta like Resene Sante Fe and Resene Tuscany, avocado greens like Resene Avocado and Resene Lichen and biscuit beiges like Resene Double Biscotti and Resene Half Akaroa to bring today’s tones to your walls, flooring and furniture The word terracotta is borrowed from Italian and translates to

The new neutrals After two decades of cool, flat greys and whites reigning as the preferred neutrals, there has been a shift towards warmer and more complex options. Character neutrals, which feature

more depth in their subtle undertones, are all the rage.

Stone greys, biscuit beiges, blush suedes, steeped whites, olive taupe, slate greys and complex pewters like Resene Cobblestone, Resene Anglaise, Resene Calico, Resene Tea, Resene Cargo, Resene Silver Chalice and Resene Blue Bark represent the new neutrals that are trending today. Immensely flexible thanks to their rich and intricate undertones, each of these hues make a solid base for those who like to regularly change up their accent décor. Simply layer them with warmer-toned accessories like Resene Fire and Resene Americano in the cooler months and crisper tones like Resene Quarter Frozen and Resene Zumthor when the mercury rises to regulate the ‘visual temperature’ of your home. Back wall in Resene Zumthor with shelf wall in Resene Blue Bark and floor stained in Resene Colorwood Dark Ebony. Linen and robe from Penney & Bennett, artwork by Sofia Lind from Slow Store, bedside table from Danske Móbler, carafe set from Sunday Homestore, ottoman from Republic Home.

‘baked earth’, so it doesn’t get much toastier or earthier than these clay-coloured hues. It’s the oxidisation of the iron rich soils used to create the porous pottery which shares the moniker that you can thank for the colour, which is undeniably warming when used in quantities both large and small. Channel the warmth of the Mediterranean with a subtly mottled paint effect in earthy hues. Wall and large vase in Resene Wild

But more and more, we’re seeing these patterns appear in more unexpected colour combinations. Rather than typical emerald and ivy greens, it’s designs with pretty pastel pinks, blues and beiges that have been popping up on our radar. NZSA // NEW ZEALAND SECURITY ASSOCIATION

Founded in 1972, the New Zealand Security Association (NZSA) is the largest industry representative body for the security industry in New Zealand, representing over 85% of the industry by revenue and employee numbers. Its members include security providers covered by the PSP&PI Act and ranging from large multinationals to sole traders, and also includes individuals and companies who are not direct providers of security services but have an interest in the industry. The NZSA’s vision is to support and promote a thriving security industry in New Zealand that operates professionally and ethically, is committed to the safety of its workers and continuous improvement, meets the needs of its stakeholders and provides reward, opportunity and both professional and personal development for those who work within it. The Association’s strategic focus includes promoting viable career pathways within the industry, ensuring industry training meets industry needs, improving industry best practice through standards, codes of practice and industry guidelines, advocacy and education. Over the last five years, the NZSA has launched a number of initiatives that have supported our vision for the industry, including:

The New Zealand Security Association (NZSA) is the largest industry representative body for the security industry in New Zealand.

In frustration at the inability to progress such an important industry resource, the NZSA took ownership of the project and through the collective efforts of the NZSA executive, board and a number of security providers, the Security Services in New Zealand Good Practice Guideline was launched in 2019 and is hosted on the NZSA website as a resource available for all industry. Security Career Pathways Website One of the greatest challenges for security providers currently is the recruitment and retention of sufficient workers to meet service requirements. This has been particularly exacerbated by the Covid pandemic. To promote the breadth of security roles and the pathway opportunities for those seeking career progression, the NZSA designed and launched the NZ Security Career Pathways website www.securitycareers.co.nz under the banner Security: a career to be proud of. The website includes information on the roles, skill set requirements, training requirements and options, indicative pay scales and possible pathways within the industry, and into other sectors or industries. The site features a number of short videos of employees in their roles, talking about their jobs and what they most enjoy about their work. It provides an excellent support tool for the NZSA Skills for Industry programme and as an introductory tool for those seeking employment and career options – be it school leavers, those seeking a career change or the newly unemployed through the impacts

Security Services in New Zealand Good Practice Guideline

On 18 November 2011 Security Officer Charanpreet Singh Dhaliwal started work for a privately owned security provider in Auckland and was assigned to guard a local construction site overnight. Tragically he was not to return home from his first night at his new job. During the night four offenders came onto the site and when confronted by Mr Dhaliwal they struck him a number of times to the head using a piece of wood and causing immediate death. The Coroner’s investigation into the death identified a number of industry issues around licensing and training and also highlighted the urgent need for an industry-wide Code of Practice or Guideline as to what constitutes good practice. Whilst the licensing and training recommendations were implemented with some expediency, the development of the COP/Guideline was unfortunately deemed to be low priority by WorkSafe (the agency tasked with development by the Coroner) and was never progressed.

Security Leadership – Literacy and Numeracy Resources The New Zealand security industry covers some 30,000 plus workers and it is estimated that between 20% and 25% of workers are impacted to some degree in the performance of their duties by literacy and numeracy challenges. We recognise that such challenges can be overcome, with the right support. The key being to create an environment for our workforce where their great attributes and capabilities are encouraged to shine, whilst recognising and supporting their challenges. The NZSA Security Industry Training and Professional Development Special Interest Group (SITPDSIG) has been instrumental in developing a package of resource modules designed to support those who have supervisory or managerial responsibility for security staff and recognise the need to imbed literacy and numeracy learning and development into everyday activities.

The modules cover: Leaders Introduction Module Effective Communications Time Management

Health and Safety in the Workplace Customer Service and Professionalism Working Shift-work Behavioural Awareness and Self Awareness

Identifying Learner Training Needs The modules have been designed to help Supervisors and Managers understand the needs of their staff and to utilise best practice learning theory and resources to improve communication and understanding within their workforce.

Resources are available to all industry at no cost and in a format that allows companies to download onto their own Learning Management System (LMS).

of Covid-19 or economic conditions. It also provides a valuable reference resource for NZSA members in their reference process. NZSA Accredited Members The NZSA provides an accreditation process where members can be audited to see if they adhere to the NZSA Codes of Practice which apply within their respective industry sector, and that they comply with the NZSA Rules and Bylaws. This provides those who go through the process with an added point of difference that they can use in promoting their business and gives confidence to the business, and their customers, that they are operating to a “best practice” standard. The accreditation certificate is valid for a five-year period, subject to an annual declaration of continuity, and requires a re-audit to support renewal.

SITESAFE // SITE REVIEWS

HEALTH AND SAFETY SITE REVIEWS CRUCIAL TOOL FOR WELLBEING OF CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Health and safety site reviews, which some often refer to as audits, are essential for any industry. Site reviews provide your business assurance that the right health and safety practices are in place and that hazards, risks, and other issues that might prevent your company from operating safely are being assessed. Having regular health and safety reviews throughout New Zealand’s construction industry has never been more important. According to WorkSafe statistics, from May 2020 to April 2021 construction had 5955 injuries resulting in more than a week away from work, while from November 2020 to October 2021 the industry had 14 fatalities – both figures ranked second highest in the country. Additionally, from May 2021 to April 2022, the construction industry had 444 people report injury, illness, or serious harm as a result of work, the highest figure nationally. As a leading advocate for positive change to the culture of health and safety within New Zealand’s construction industry, Site Safe is proud to be able to provide the industry with SiteRight, its own safety review system powered by ecoPortal.

Woolworth’s New Zealand has been receiving these reviews for about seven years. Head of construction, Rob Jones, said he was “glad” the advisors auditing safety were overseeing projects from a “fresh set of eyes”. "I don't want to hear just the good news you know I want to hear the bad news, but I have been seeing reports recently of a couple of jobs that have been coming in at 65 per cent opposed to 90 so I'm glad to see that when it is actually a low score that [way] we can address it.” SiteRight was a “useful” tool and having external reviewers viewing live construction projects provided “comfort” to both himself and the health and safety department, Jones said. It also helped Woolworths with “raising awareness of safety” and reaching their goals to zero harm in the workplace, he said. “They’ve got this external sort of independent audit happening on a monthly basis which I think it … just keeps [health and safety] front of mind for the live construction project and all those supervisors.”

MATES IN CONSTRUCTION

The construction industry loses more workers to suicide every year than any other industry in New Zealand. On average, one construction worker takes their own life every week. Our industry is vibrant, exciting, and integral to the New Zealand economy, but it can also be a challenging industry to work in with long hours, transient working conditions and masculine stoic beliefs that can impact on our people’s mental health and wellbeing. The current context is exacerbating these pressures. Construction costs have risen at their fastest pace since 2012 and labour and supply shortages are impacting the industries’ ability to deliver on-time and on-budget. Our people are also feeling the pressure at home with annual inflation hitting a 30-year high of 6.9%, the biggest financial squeeze for households seen in over three decades. Nationally, rents are increasing, mortgage rates are on the rise and the cost of food and petrol is up. MATES in Construction are seeing the impacts of this in our mahi on the ground and research carried out by MATES has also confirmed the impact that the global pandemic is having on our industries mental wellbeing. 43% of survey respondents reported that their mental health had been worse since COVID-19 arrived in New Zealand and the main reasons for this were COVID protocols, high workloads and workplace pressures and delays. Our

recent study also highlighted the ongoing need for suicide prevention suicide services like MATES in construction with 4% of survey respondents – 45 people – reporting that they had seriously considered ending their own life in the four months following the Delta variant arriving in New Zealand.

In 2021, MATES provided mental health and suicide awareness training to over 11,000 construction workers in New Zealand and that was a year with four months taken up in lockdown. “Now more than ever, we need to make sure we are showing up to support our industry and our most important asset, our people. In the last six months we have almost doubled our workforce so that we can make sure we are meeting the needs of our people.” – Victoria McArthur, CEO MATES. MATES is now operating out of Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Dunedin with the ability to support our growing stakeholders.
