EMEX 40th ANNIVERSARY! Welcome to New Zealand’s largest engineering and manufacturing innovation trade show. A trade show that has spanned four decades showcasing new technology, products, solutions and know-how. It’s highly appropriate that we recognise the long legacy of this show given that this is our 40th anniversary. Andy Hobbs along with his team had much initiative and drive during EMEX’s infancy to grow this show from it’s foundations before it was handed to dmg World Media (part of the Daily Mail Group UK) and then subsequently XPO. As the subsequent owners and organisers, we too have worked hard to further the show and continue a great relationship with Andy, Greg, Keith, Lisa and the wider team at Hayley Media, publishers of Engineering News industry magazine. A special mention across all our media partners, and the 180+ exhibitors and industry associations who stayed the course to EMEX 2021 after our unavoidable 2020 postponement (along with 17 other shows we rescheduled). As event organisers we work hard to advocate the importance of events like EMEX in kick starting the economy again. At no other time has an event like this been so important to the recovery of the sector. A big thank you too for the resilience and resolve of our loyal industry visitors. We’ve had a strong pre-registration that will see many thousands visit EMEX over the 3 days. Buoyed by the exhibitor new product innovations and a larger than ever schedule of speakers and special features means you will not leave disappointed. So what have we got lined up for you? For starters, four very full exhibition halls packed with thousands of new products, solutions and technology. The Innovation Quarter featuring examples of the latest Kiwi technologies; launch of the Industry 4 Demonstration Network - a dedicated mobile showcase that begins it’s nationwide journey at EMEX; Manufacturing Futures series of presentations; Callaghan Innovation Workshops presenting what Industry 4.0 can achieve for your business; the ever popular DfAM course with Professor Olaf Diegel; Auckland Unlimited’s Business Support Hub with free business growth advice; show specials; onsite prizes and so much more!! This year’s line up of workshops and seminars is the biggest ever, delivering close to 30 free sessions for all visitors to attend. Several highlights include NZ’s very own Rocket Man, Peter Beck from Rocket Lab - his keynote session on Monday at 11.30am is set to be full to capacity so be sure to arrive early. On Tuesday Callaghan Innovation host the Manufacturing Futures series presenting how the advanced and connected technologies of Industry 4.0 can help your business secure a bright future. Add to this a Design for Additive Manufacturing Course and a dedicated series of Innovation Workshops the biggest challenge for you is to ensure you plan your time well so as not to miss any of it! Finally, as a major event organiser and collaborator of the Events Safety Code, XPO asks that you please download and scan upon entry the government Covid app to help trace contact record your attendance (in addition to familiarising yourself of all safety signage, liberally utilising hand santiser and staying home if you are unwell). Have a great show!

Manufacturing in the time of the virus
Manufacturers looking for new business opportunities are looking to the latest technologies . Success comes as much from incremental change, as it does from radical transformation. This change is delivered by new product development or improvements to productivity, design and manufacturing processes. Many manufacturers look to trade shows to compare their own future readiness to their fellow exporters and competitors, and while the rest of the world may have largely cancelled their shows or taken them online, EMEX 2021 will be the biggest yet. This year EMEX celebrates its fortieth anniversary, having assisted many companies on the road to success. Whether it be through the latest in 3D software, machine tools, supply chains or the inspiration gained from listening to one of the talks given by experts on the way forward, visitors will gain significantly from attending. Exhibitors use EMEX as an opportunity to demonstrate and sell their latest products and services to customers, as well as networking and exchanging ideas with their customers and peers. In 2020, New Zealand’s economy bounced back strongly from recession in the third quarter, achieving a so-called V-shaped recovery as massive financial stimulus fuelled consumer spending. While the virus hit us hard after taking early and decisive action, the payback has been significant.
After GDP declined 1.6% in the Mar-20 quarter and 11% in Jun-20, it recovered 14% in Sep-20. This brought us to a better than expected 0.4% increase above the Sep-19 quarter, considerably better than the OECD total, which showed a 3.9% decline. It is now that New Zealand can take advantage of going fast and early in the COVID lockdown and further advance our industries in taking on the world. New Zealand is in a strong position for 2021, allowing business to innovate and keep moving ahead in challenging times.
Each day EMEX hosts an exciting schedule of speakers and seminars that will help you with manufacturing in the time of the virus. Plan your visit at www.emex.co.nz

Collaborative Resource – Sharing Engineers to Manage Workload Peaks and Troughs Stand #1030
Caliber Design is a mechanical design consultancy with offices in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch, employing over 30 design engineers. The company works on a project-based model, where engineers are seconded to clients for a specific task or project. Our clients are usually looking for more resource because: • they have a tight deadline and not enough resource internally to meet it. • the project requires software they don’t have experience with. • they don’t have the specialist skills inhouse to do the job. Caliber Design engineers work with some of New Zealand’s most innovative businesses, across many different industries: Aerospace, Production Equipment, Food Processing, Materials Handling, Dairy/Agriculture, Heavy Industry, and Marine. Typically, Caliber engineers work on site with the client, as part of their team. This differentiates them from your typical consultancy. Being onsite means they can embed themselves the client’s team, enables them to develop a deep understanding of the client’s business, and ensures transparency and clear communication. In saying that, the Covid experience of working from home has proven the rigour of Caliber’s systems and processes … tried and tested because our team always works remotely from each other. The upheaval that Covid-19 has created has fast tracked an initiative that Caliber have been quietly establishing over the last few years: partnering with other engineering companies throughout NZ to develop resource ‘collaboratives’ to share design engineering resource. Having experienced the Canterbury Earthquakes and now Covid, Caliber know their
project-based / seconded-engineering business model works, especially in times of crisis. But sharing resources across companies takes this to another level ... For business owners, sharing resource helps them: • manage peaks and troughs. • keep their key people employed through challenging times. • avoid the risks and hassle of hiring new staff. • develop a network of highly skilled and flexible engineers. • get new perspectives on design problems. • learn from the highly tuned systems, processes, templates that we have developed to ensure seamless staff sharing. There are many benefits for the engineers. They learn from gaining experience with different teams, businesses, industries, and design methodologies and processes. It means more variety, job security, and a wider network. For NZ Inc, it means that skills and experience are cross-pollinated throughout industry and a stronger skill base is the result. Upskilling across the industry occurs while businesses collaborate and support each other to deliver their projects on time, on spec, and on budget. If you’re interested in finding out more about Resource Collaboratives, please contact Jonathan Prince jonathan.prince@caliberdesign.co.nz | 021 582 199 Wayne Le Sueur wayne.lesueur@caliberdesign.co.nz | 021 140 4944

Callaghan Innovation is NZ’s innovation agency. The government agency activates innovation and helps businesses grow faster for a better NZ. Supporting the HighTech Products sector is a key focus for Callaghan Innovation. In fact, of the total 2866 businesses it supported in the year ending 30 June 2020, 13% of those businesses were from the manufacturing sector. This is despite the manufacturing and digital industries being heavily impacted by COVID-19, due to their reliance on access to international markets. A key priority for Callaghan Innovation is enabling businesses to adapt to growing areas of potential such as Industry 4.0 – the fusion of technologies that’s blurring the lines between the physical, digital and cyber-physical.
