NEW ZEALAND AND MORE THAN 26,000 TRAINEES AND APPRENTICES
– 4,200 OF THOSE IN THE ENGINEERING SECTOR AND 3,400 IN MANUFACTURING.
“Working with so many firms we gain valuable insight into the workforce challenges people are facing every day,” Kingsford says. “Because we know the engineering and manufacturing industries really well, we can design workforce development solutions to help businesses realise both immediate and long- term gains.” On-the-job training without the fees The government has made it more affordable for employers to train people on-the-job with two years fees-free industry training through Competenz. This means the costs usually paid by employers, apprentices and trainees in the first two years will now be free for some people. Apprentices can check their eligibility at www.feesfree.govt.nz before signing a training agreement. The policy came into effect on 1 January 2018 and Competenz is already signing up people who qualify for funding. “There’s no better time to take on an apprentice,” Kingsford says. “For people already working in the industry who haven’t completed tertiary training before, it’s an opportunity to start getting qualified at no cost. “Your workers will grow their skills and knowledge and gain NZQA-recognised qualifications while learning on-the-job.” TALK TO COMPETENZ AT EMEX Competenz staff will be at EMEX to discuss apprenticeships, training and workforce development solutions. Come and see us at the Employment and Training Hub.
THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR WILL NEED TO FIND MORE THAN 12,000 PEOPLE BY 2022 TO PREDOMINANTLY REPLACE WORKERS WHO RETIRE OR LEAVE. APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THE WORKFORCE HAS NO POST- SCHOOL QUALIFICATION. Training and education are essential for responding to rapidly advancing technology, succession planning and ongoing profitability and competitive advantage. “Through our ongoing dialogue with businesses, there is concern within the engineering and manufacturing sectors about the lack of team leaders and tradespeople who possess managerial skills,” Kingsford says. “This is highly- relevant to workforce development as research consistently highlights that there is a link between quality of management and the productivity of the business.” COMPETENZ WORKS WITH MORE THAN 3,500 COMPANIES AROUND
