Research and Innovation in the New Zealand Heavy Engineering Industry.
The session provides an overview of sector overarching research and development activities covered by the NZ Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA). Examples of these activities are steel construction innovation R&D including the formation of the international steel fabrication certification scheme and the low enthalpy energy conversion program of the Above Ground Geothermal and Allied Technology (AGGAT) program. Attendees will have the opportunity to enquire how they will be able to participate in these industry wide activities. Speaker Since graduating as a mechanical engineer from the Technical University of Stuttgart, Germany, Dr Scholz has specialised in the field of automation technology for manufacturing environments. This was also the subject of his PhD, which he completed at the University of Auckland. His work with industrial robot welding systems created a particular interest in welding and led him to study for a Welding Engineer Certificate. Following several years in the German metals industry first as manager of industrial engineering and then of production, he moved in 1987 to New Zealand to establish and manage the New Zealand Welding Centre at HERA. Since 1996 he has been appointed Deputy Director of HERA and since 2000 he has taken over as HERA Director. He holds several advisory and board/executive positions relating to engineering training and industry development associations and is a Fellow of IPENZ. ing Dr Wolfgang Scholz, HERA Director | Metals New Zealand
