RESENE
Over the past few years, we’ve been spending much more time at home and it’s become clearer than ever what an effect decorating can have on our mood and psyche. Walls, floors and ceilings are the backdrop to so many accessories and gift purchases. These are some of the colour themes your clients may be inspired by:
1 Slow Spaces This shift towards making our homes into havens where we can shelter from the chaotic energy of everyday life has also influenced colour trends as we seek out comforting hues that are known for their calming qualities. Dusted blues, sea greens, creamy whites, petal pinks, mushroom mauves, cloudy greys and washed timber tones like Resene Inside Back, Resene Green Meets Blue, Resene Blanc, Resene Sakura, Resene In The Mauve, Resene Surrender and Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy are perfect for setting the tone in spaces where rest and recuperation are needed. 2 Natural Healing Although no indoor environment can replace the experience of the natural world, research is showing that incorporating nature into the built environment – whether in the form of sunlight and fresh ventilation, decorating with plants and organic materials or painting
your space in earth-inspired hues – can improve comfort, reduce stress and potentially contribute to improved health indicators. This principle is known as biophilic design. As more of us have begun to understand the benefits of biophilic design, natural colours like Resene Bone, Resene Copyrite, Resene Castle Rock and Resene Stonewashed have become increasingly popular. But today, there is no earthy hue more desirable to decorate with than green. From olive and army like Resene Olive Green, Resene Waiouru and Resene Siam, deep forest greens like Resene Black Forest, Resene Jurassic and Resene Raptor to grey greens like Resene Paddock and Resene Finch, the choices for on-trend greens are as broad as the ways you can use them in your home. 3 Fortune Favours the Bold Though plain, pared back, all-white spaces may have once been thought of as the epitome of contemporary design, it turns out living in an environment that’s too sterile and devoid of colour doesn’t do your mental wellbeing any favours. Whether you’re dreaming of a statement wall in an eye-catching colour and design, want to build up a richly layered pattern-on-pattern look or feel like even just a little more character would go a long way, putting your personality on display has never been more in vogue. 4 Turning Back Time Colours, textures and materials that reflect a collective sense of nostalgia are a significant current design trend, and it’s understandable why. Given the amount of time most of us have spent inside lately, the popularity of pastoral looks – which embrace the essence of homeliness and a wistfulness for the ‘good old days’ – are an attempt to ground ourselves during uncertain times. Sun-bleached pastels, mauves, greys, beiges, browns and terracotta tones are natural fits for pastoral looks, but their mismatched nature also lends an opportunity to use quirky colours to customise your space. While an authentic vintage patina can be quite desirable on older items, there are also many Resene products that you can use to restore an item that’s looking a little too worse for wear or to lend a weathered vibe to a newer piece. Resene Colorwood Natural timber stain is a beautiful hue for bringing golden warmth to wooden furniture or flooring while Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Resene Colorwood Greywash can be used to create
a weathered look. Chalk finishes and waxes such as Karen Walker Chalk Colour and Karen Walker Vintage Wax can be used to add colour with a velvety matte finish or be rubbed over a colour coat to impart a rustic one. And non-contact surfaces such as light fixtures or decorative accents in materials like plastic, timber, concrete and metal can be given the look of years of rust in mere hours with Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. 5 Glamour and Darks Don’t be afraid of the dark. Used with some thought, dark colours can create spaces that are inviting, sumptuous and luxe without being overbearing or stuffy. The key is balance. Try bold, dark, colour saturated shades like smoky Resene Nocturnal, charcoal Resene Invincible and sumptuous blue Resene Ocean Waves paired with contrasting metallics like Resene Silver Aluminium for extra opulence, or with milky neutrals like Resene Friar Greystone, Resene Stepping Stone or Resene Courtyard for freshness and light that ensures the space stays modern and elegant. A swathe of dark wall, whether it’s in the stylish navy of Resene Coast, charcoal Resene Cod Grey or dark maroon Resene Rustic Red, is lent an extra note of sophistication when it includes texture. Try painting over Resene Anaglypta Wallpaper or, for a more natural texture use Resene Colorwood Pitch Black or Resene Colorwood Dark Ebony stain over plywood to showcase the grain. It has a similar effect to using luxury fabrics like velvet or suede.

6 Beautiful Brushstrokes A retaliation to design industrialisation and digitisation is a resurgence in artistic styles. One trend that’s big right now is brushstrokes. It can be a really fun, creative way to add texture and interest to large stretches of wall, and some complexity and interest to your colour palette. Try a subtle neutral base colour like the soft pink of Resene Wax Flower and add edginess by overlaying it with strokes of deeper Resene Cab Sav. Add a layer of wispier white with Resene FX Paint Effects medium mixed with Resene Scotch Mist. Or go for a more monochrome look with Resene Half New Denim Blue, then add brushstrokes in Resene Half Athens Grey. Using Resene FX Paint Effects helps give your brushstrokes that textured, slightly worn effect. 7 Chit Chat For design elements that are immediate, eye-catching conversation starters, it’s hard to go past Resene wallpaper. A few drops of the right Resene wallpaper design can instantly change a room but to really get people talking think about designs that are unique, unexpected or even outrageous. Playful and colourful options will let you experiment with complementary Resene paint colours in other parts of the room. 8 Framed The plainest of walls can be easily dressed up with battens, which continues to be a popular trend. But there’s another option to create interesting walls without needing any building skills – simply add frames! Upcycle or buy new inexpensive frames depending on the style and look you are after. Op shops are a great place to find these. Remove the glass and backings – you can put them aside for another project. Paint the frames inside and out with your chosen Resene colour. Use masking tape to
decide where you will place the frames on the wall or lay your frames out on the floor and get the combination right before you start hanging the frames. For a fun alternative look, add a mirror, a piece of art or paint the framed area in Resene FX Chalkboard Paint. While it is most common to paint the frames in the same Resene paint and colour as the wall, you can opt for a contrasting sheen, using Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss to give your frames a subtle visual contrast to low sheen walls. Throwing off the shackles of conformity Embrace ‘free to be me’ and throw colour caution to the wind. Don’t choose a trend or a colour just because it is trendy. Choose it because it brightens your day and lifts your mood. Choose it because you truly love it. RX GROUP
Focus on marketing. Discover how you can easily increase customer awareness by applying 5 top tips from Juanita Neville-Te Rito, Founder of RX Group.
Five tips to slay it in 2023 Spread the word
Every year, the pace of retail accelerates. 2022 was hard for retail business AND customers; price increases, supply chain difficulties, changing customer behaviour and habits, tired systems and processes, and economic uncertainty. 2023 is just starting and already businesses are stretched. The rain won’t stop. Teams are exhausted. Customers are tightening their belts. Costs are going up. Despite these difficulties, the future of retail is still bright. I’ve been in this business for 30 years and you can get through. You just need to be super focused on what matters most. Make 2023 the year you spend your focus on the stuff that will make a real difference.
1
Seems like a no-brainer but too many businesses open their doors and hope shoppers will come and buy. Customers are bombarded with messages and live permanently in a state of partial awareness. Your business/products aren’t the most important thing in their world. But you do want to be on their radar WHEN they need your products and services. How do they know who you are and what you sell if you don’t spread the word? It doesn’t need to be expensive, just well-considered. Where to start • Do you have a digital presence? Facebook page, Insta page, Tik-Tok, website, Google for business listing? • Do you update with what you sell to get people excited? • Are your business details and opening hours up to date? • Do you get your regular shoppers contact details and communicate with them? • Have you asked your shoppers for reviews or to tell their friends about your products/store? Word of mouth is one of the strongest tools around. If I’ve never heard of you or can’t see what you sell, how can I come and buy from you? If you don’t know what to do, there are countless videos on YouTube that can walk you through how to do these things. No excuses. Know who your customer is Do you REALLY know who your customer is? Nine times out of ten the answer I hear is “not really.” Building a clear picture of who they are and what they look like means you are super-focused on what you do and who you are doing it for. Start now on building a picture and get real clarity of who you are in business for. Where to start • Creating a pinterest page with images or cut out pictures of who you think your customer is. • What they look like, how they dress, what their behaviour and perceptions are like. • Print it out and put it somewhere prominently to remind you every day. • Why? You want to keep these people front of mind when you do everything from buying products, communicating with them, laying out your offer. Everything! • For example, if sustainability is important to your customer, have you curated those products together or placed supporting information near the product detailing the features and benefits? • Understanding your customer focuses you on the trends that are relevant to your shoppers. We know one retailer who displayed at Fieldays. They sold a product targeted at middle-aged women. The product and location was all wrong and they then complained they had wasted money at the event. No kidding! 2

Provide solutions Customers are constantly searching for solutions to their problems, their needs, wants and desires. Customers are also pressed for time. Help them discover what will solve their problem. Where to start • Make sure your store layout and product adjacencies make sense. Shoppers logically expect to find products that relate to each other together. It also helps with their decision-making. • Bundle items together that make sense and provides a full solution for a shopper. Eg. a tea cup, tea diffuser, packs of tea and beautiful spoon is a wonderful solution. Move stock This might seem obvious but we often see retailers hang onto stock way too long “because we paid this for it.” Tying cash up in product that no one wants is bad business (and paying to store it is worse). Where to start • If stock isn’t moving, cut once, cut deep and get it gone. Move it and move on. • Customers crave newness. Rotating displays and highlighting new or seasonal products are common sense. • Rotating stock and highlighting new stock gives customers a reason to come in more often. Who doesn’t want to see “what’s new and exciting” or simply something they haven’t seen before. 4
Eye candy = Buy Candy A picture tells a thousand words. Seeing product is a deal breaker in retail. Where to start • Keep stock on shelf – you can’t sell fresh air. • That means walking the store every day as a customer. Is it clean, tidy, are the shelves faced, are there gaps? Does it look inviting, or does it look bare and gappy? Can I navigate the store or is it a hodgepodge of displays? • Have as many images as possible on your webstore – it’s a deal-breaker for decision-making and reduces returns. If I can’t see it you can’t sell it. • Visually appealing displays create excitement, interest and compels a shopper to reach in. You may have heard these things before, but did you really listen to why they are important? Based on our years in the retail industry and working with hundreds of retailers, these 5 simple points can make the difference between whether you are a winner or a loser in business. Get out and slay it in 2023.
